Grand River Kayak fights climate change

It may have been cold and overcast but that wasn't enough to stop Kayaking enthusiasts from enjoying the Grand River last Saturday.

On October 24, Grand River Kayak hosted a kayaking event as part of a global day of climate change awareness. The trip on the Grand River consisted of a 350 minute paddle starting at Grand River BBQ in Byng to Port Maitland and back again. The total distance is approximately 25 km round trip.

The rowers chose the 24th specifically because of its significance as International Day of Climate Action. This event and events all over the world are happening in relation to 350.org,a climate change activism group.

"October is united nations day. We are very pleased about this connection, because through our work, we hope to honor the work of the United Nations as an institution. It is truly the only global institution suitable to the task of a global climate agreement," said Ed and Tanya Sullivan in a prepared statement.

350's mission is to inspire the world to rise to the challenge of the climate crisis and to create a new sense of urgency and of possibility for our planet.

The focus on the number 350, as in parts per million, is the level scientists have identified as the safe upper limit for CO2 in our atmosphere. But 350 has become more than a number, it's a symbol of where mankind needs to head.

Oct 24, is also United Nations Day. As such 350 has taken this opportunity to promote their event on the same day in the hopes of gaining some recognition. For more information visit 350.orgonline.
