Dear Editor,

At what point does reason and common sense deflect ideology? There are going to be times when a public option is going to be better than a private option and Stephen Harper cannot and does not want to accept that.

How long will it take before Stephen Harper and the rest of his self serving government do what is right for Canada instead of what he sees as best.? Denying the Chalk River reactor the monies it requires is about underfunding and creating the illusion of a problem in the public realm for the sake of destroying or privatizing it.

There are ample areas where private business can and will always outperform public utilities or institutions. Is that not enough? Must private business own every piece of the pie?

Instead of wasting money on sidewalks and walkways which don't last long anyways, put that money into areas that are long term options that will benefit all Canadians.

It baffles me that a so-called "Conservative" party is currently involved in a process that does nothing but squander public tax dollars on projects that will bear less fruit than fixing things such as the Chalk River reactor.

Is Stephen Harper so afraid of "sustainable" in the public sector that he can't even approach "practical"?

Staying Safe this Halloween -- Learning the Buddy System To the editor,

Statistically, Halloween evening presents a higher risk to children, so it's important that parents and guardians talk to their children about safe practices to reduce their chance of being harmed. To assist with this, the Canadian Centre for Child Protection has developed Billy Brings His Buddies Halloween Game -an online game to help teach children the Buddy System. Learning this valuable safety habit in a fun and interactive way is an important step towards reducing children's vulnerability to victimization this Halloween. To access the game, Halloween safety tips and other child personal safety resources, please visit www.billybuddy.ca< http://www.billybuddy.ca>.

Have a happy and safe Halloween! Lianna McDonald, Executive Director,

TO THE EDITOR:

DREAM celebrated the success of 24 of its students during a special ceremony at Dunnville Secondary School on Friday, Oct. 23. DREAM is especially thankful to mentors Joanne Jackson, Reza Kazemi, and Steve Allen, along with another 35 DREAM volunteers who have been part of enriching these students' lives.

Over the past four years, DREAM mentors have promoted a youth mentorship program about raising self-community and social awareness in their twice-monthly meetings with the students.

Together, we have become more confident in our own skin as we navigate the issues that are important to us through the working groups, Preserving our Planet, Homelessness and Poverty, Theatre of Tomorrow, and the Global Literacy Field School.

Together, we have learned about the world we live in, its fragile environment, its gross inequities, and its beauties that compel us to work as a team for meaningful change.

DREAM extends a special recognition and appreciation to the following individuals, businesses and service clubs who have donated funds toward the DREAM Class of 2009 Scholarships of $1,500 per student, which were distributed on Friday night: the Rotary Club of Dunnville, Lions Club, Lioness Club, Optimist Club, Amity Lodge #32, William and Marian Blott, Graham Wood, Dan Dulmage, Rehana Rouf, Marv Ens, Bryan Fretz, Ted Spencer, Donna Hoover, Robert Rowe, Jane and Roy Schofield, Barb and Reza Kazemi, Dunnville Sobey's, Giant Tiger, Rasch & Chambers Ltd., IDA Hauser's Pharmacy, Dunnville Youth Advisory Council, Dunnville & District Credit Union, BMO, Dunnville Branch, and Financial Consulting Group, Wilfred Culp.

These Partners in DREAM did not know the students personally, yet by willing to extend themselves above self, they have supported a dream of "creating a world where all students have equal access to all levels of education."
